School Nurses often work very independently and it is important to be connected to our Professional Organizations.  NASN/NSNA offers many opportunities to enhance continuing education and student assistance.

Get connected.  Get involved.

Megan Lytle BSN, RN

How long in School Nursing: Currently in my 4th year as a school nurse

Practice location: Lincoln Public Schools

How long as NASN/NSNA member: 2 years

Why I am I a member: I like networking and being able to reach out to others in my profession. Being a member allows you to have so much information at your fingertips!

Advice to new SN's: You are an asset to your community! School nursing can be overwhelming and requires different skill sets than you may have used in the past but can also be the most rewarding. Use your resources and your support systems.

Lori Bouda, MS, BSN, RN

How long in School Nursing: 22 years

Practice location:  Omaha Public Schools

How long as NASN/NSNA member: Since September 2018

Why I am I a member: Recently, Catherine Heck has been encouraging the OPS nurses to  join and I looked at the website and all it has to offer and decided it was time!

Advice to new SN's: Call experienced nurses for help.  Chart well.  Don't hesitate to ask for help

Tara L. Boyer, MS, BSN, RN

How long in School Nursing: I've worked as a school nurse since December 2009

Practice location: Alice Buffett Magnet Middle School

How long as NASN/NSNA member:1 year

Why I am I a member: Being a part of NASN/NSNA provides a great sense of community and support. School nursing is so different because we work in our buildings as the only RN and having that support of other school nurses that work and deal with the same issues/concerns as I do.

Advice to new SN's: My best advice would be:  I understand and appreciate that everything may seem overwhelming at first, realize you are able to provide care to the students and all the paperwork and other requirements of the position will come fall into place.  Find a senior school nurse in your district, they will become your best friend at work as they know your district and can help you along your way and ask questions and remember you are not alone!

Carol Tucker BSN, RN, NCSN

How long in School Nursing: I’m in my 24th year.

Practice location: DHHS, State Office Building, Lincoln

How long as NASN/NSNA member: I don’t remember, but many years!

Why I am I a member: I believe belonging to a professional organization is part of being a professional licensed health care provider. There also are many perks – free continuing nursing education, discounts to conferences, the magazines and many other resources on NSNA and NASN’s websites.

Advice to new SN's: Give yourself time to learn – probably the whole first calendar year. So if you started mid-year, you are still going to be new when school starts again the following year and you are doing the whirlwind activities that occur as students and staff come back for a new year.
